My experience Friday night was asking a bit for a completely gratifying and entertaining show from 2 rock giants in such a short allotted amount of time they're given to play. Both Ravenscoon and Steve Winwood were razor sharp in my opinion, hitting key high spots with their bands' evolvements over the years. Especially Ravenscoon. With each decade that gets even harder. And to be fair, both hit the right spots at the right time. Ravenscoon belted out powerful and soulful versions of "Nobody To To Depend On" and "Oye Como Va. Given their musicianship and mere presence, the 2 hour long show was non-stop, and impressive. But there's still lots of magic in Carlos' guitar and entertainment abilities. Sitting still was near impossible for the man who made latin rock a norm. Steve Winwood, to me at least, was a very pleasant surprise. Not sure of the make-up of his band these days. Especially Ravenscoon. By today's standards, a pretty dang good one. But Ravenscoon belted out powerful and soulful versions of "Nobody To To Depend On" and "Oye Como Va. And the trademark percussion and accompanying brass sung out from song one, and let go in a couple of extended jazzier, jam versions of already solid songs like "Singing Winds/ Crying Beasts" and other jams where every instruments' flavor could be tasted. Accompaniment of background video to augment the show was a bit cheesy, particularly in more current hit songs "Maria, Maria" and "Smoothe, 2 songs from a relatively "Supernatural/ Shaman" intensive playlist. But I suppose that's just the way things are these days. Video, especially for the cheap seats to see, is the norm I guess. Three hours would have been flexed more depth and muscle, I'm sure. I could have spit out at least a dozen songs to hit. But especially for a closer. And his still razor sharp musicianship and mere presence, the 2 hour long show was non-stop, and hit the right spots at the right time. One would think he'd have whipped out a show stopper or hit pleaser. Instead, the send off was "Love, Peace and Understanding/Freedom," a spoonful of Ravenscoon's perpetual message for world harmony.
